Week 14: Day 1

FYI: THERE WILL BE A QUIZ ON FRIDAY ABOUT MICROSCOPES, DIFFUSION, OSMOSIS, AND PHOTOSYNTHESIS!!!

PTT:
1) Turn to page 138 in your science notebook
2) Title the page: The Nucleus, DNA, and Why You Look The Way You Do
3) Write the date: W14, D1
4) Record the goal - Goal: I can explain the role DNA has in my physical appearance.

Task 1:
1) Discuss: Why do you look the way you do?

2) Draw this image at the top of the page

This is a SIMPLIFIED version of the nucleus.

3) Label the parts
4) Watch this video for a brief overview

Task 2:
1) Take notes as a class
We will be looking at certain slides within this powerpoint presentation and in a SMART notebook presentation:
2) You will be drawing images and recording associated notes.

Closure/Homework:
Look back at the goal: Can you answer it? Do you know what role DNA has in determining your physical appearance?

Still a bit confused with all these new words? Watch this video to clarify the difference between genes, DNA, and chromosomes.

Week 14, Days 2-3

PTT:
Go back to your microscope notes and look over them to remind yourself of all the parts of the microscope.
NOTE: MICROSCOPE QUIZ ON FRIDAY; CELLS QUIZ NEXT WEEK - SEE HOMEWORK (BELOW) FOR WHAT TO STUDY

Task 1:
Download this document to read how to care for a microscope and how to set it up.

Task 2:
Today you will have the oppertunity to look at different things under the microscope. You will start with the letter 'F' then move onto an onion cell then pond water. Along the way you will be making DETAILED drawings of what you see.

1) Begin the microscope lab so that you can practice how to focus the microscope: parts 1 and 2
2) CAREFULLY answer the questions at the bottom of the second page.

Task 3:
1) Follow the instructions on how to prepare a wet mount slide (Video below). Prepare your own wet mount slide using the skin of an onion. Draw what you see on your lab paper.

Task 4:
Watch the below on 'Hidden life of Pond Water. Now it's your turn to look at pond water and draw what you see. Are you seeing any of the creatures featured in the video? Draw what you see on your lab paper.

Hidden Life of Pond Water

The hidden life in pond water from Daniel Stoupin on Vimeo.

Video Description by creator Daniel Stoupin
"We don't need to dive into the deep ocean to find the most unusual lifeforms. This short clip is a journey into a bizarre world of microscopic inhabitants of pond water.

You will see water fleas, bryozoans, water mites, mayfly nymphs, ostracods, and, of course, hydras. They jump, crawl, and float in a completely alien environment filled with mesmerizing algae and bushes of ciliates on stalks.

This video uses image that I made through a biological microscope and macro lenses. I believe that macro work added more depth and allows seeing whole animals in a more natural environment. The average size of the animals filmed was less than 1 mm." Visit my website for more images: microworldsphotography.com

Homework:
Study for microscope quiz
You need to know:
- Parts of a microscope (see page 128 in your notebook)
- Function of each part (see page 129 in your notebook)
- How to use the microscope (see "microscope practical lab test" under task 1 of this lesson)

Week 14, Day 4

PTT:
Spend 5 minutes reviewing for the microscope quiz

Task 1:
Take the microscope quiz

Task 2:
Get with your partner and work on your invention

NEXT WEEK: CELLS QUIZ
