Week 11, Days 1-2

PTT:
1) Read this:
Background Information: We will be finishing up the year with the science fair on May 15. In 7th grade, we will be presenting the Invention Convention as our part of the science fair. This means that you and a partner will be coming up with your own invention. We've decided to start the project a little early this year so that you and your partner will be all set with an idea and ready to invent when the time comes for the project.

2) Search Challenge - Invention Convention
Below is a screenshot from a video Mr. Austen found that talks about one interesting inventor. Based on the image, answer the following questions:

What is the invention featured here? (Easy)
Who was the inventor and what year did he invent this product? (Easy/Medium)
What is the name of the video I took this screenshot from? (Hard)

3) Choose a partner (just ONE partner) to work with on the Invention Convention project.

Task 1:
1) As a class, let's take a look at some of these student examples. These are real life inventions created by kids just your age.

2) Make a copy of this document for you and your partner. Make sure that it is in BOTH of your science folders in Google Drive so that it is shared with me as well.
3) Partner Work: In your shared Google Doc, identify the PROBLEM and SOLUTION (invention) from each of the 9 examples at the clean tech link in the table that is in the document.

Task 2:
1) Visit the Discovery Education website and take a look at the Science Fair Invention Project Steps. What is a problem you would like to fix through inventing something? What are the steps to making that invention?
2) Check out these student examples from the 2012 Invention Convention:

Task 3: Brainstorming
Work with your partner to come up with a list of 30 everyday problems.
Record these in your shared google doc under "Brainstorming"
These are your starting point for thinking up an invention.

Task 4: Choosing a Project
Follow the directions under "Choosing a Project" to complete that section and determine what problem you are going to solve and what invention you'll create to solve it.

Task 5: Research
Now that you've chosen a problem and come up with a potential invention, do some background research that relates to this problem. Get more details about what problems this issue causes. See what other people have tried to come up with to solve the problem (and, remember, your invention needs to be DIFFERENT from anything you find.)

Week 12, Day 1

PTT:
1) Open the Invention Convention document you created and shared with your partner before break.
2) Check in: what did you get finished? You should be done with 9 Amazing Teenagers and Brainstorming. You should be working on "Choosing a Project."
NO

Task 1:
If not completed, finish "Choosing a Project." You will be narrowing down your choices to 4 options for which you can create an invention.

Task 2: Research
1) Now that you've chosen a problem and come up with a potential invention, do some background research that relates to this problem. Get more details about what problems this issue causes. See what other people have tried to come up with to solve the problem (and, remember, your invention needs to be DIFFERENT from anything you find.)
2) CITE YOUR SOURCES!!! You will need to include sources of information on the project website you make for the Invention Convention

Task 3: Solution and Design
1) Complete the "Solution" section in the document
2) Begin making a design for your invention. Include this under the "Design" section of the document.

Week 15, Days 2-3

PTT:
1) Go to Google Drive and open up the Invention Convention Document you created and shared with your partner before Semana Santa.
2) Self-assess: where are you in the design process? What materials do you need?

Task 1:
Today you MUST know
a) What your invention is
b) Have a design for it
c) Have a materials list so that you can start building in the next class period

For the Invention Convention you need to have:
1) your working invention
2) a planned presentation (see rubric document)
3) A report (follow the attached instructions below)
3) a website on weebly.com that includes
- a design that is attractive and keeps people's attention (remember, you're trying to convince them to buy your product!)
- Home page: a main page that describes what your invention is, catches people's attention, and makes them think they might want it
- Need: a page that describes what need you are fulfilling with your project (the "problem" you're solving)
- Materials and Budget: a page that describes the materials used and how much they cost
- Construction: a page that explains the step by step procedure used to make your invention; includes information on any adjustments you made to the design
- Environmental and Social Impact: a page that describes the social and environmental impact of your invention
- Advertisement: An advertisement for your invention; should be a video (see marketing plan instructions)
- Pictures and diagrams
*Use the report rubric to assess whether you have included everything needed in your website
*Be sure to make ALL members of your invention team editors on your website so that you can ALL work on it (do this by going to settings and selecting editors)

Important Documents:
(All rubrics for the invention project)
(Instructions for your invention report)
(Rubric for your report and website)
(Marketing/Advertisement Instructions)
(Environmental/Social Impact Instructions and Questions)
