See if you can identify what type of symbiosis each of these example interactions are: mutualism, commensalism, or parasitism:
a) Berries or fruits are eaten by birds or mammals. The seeds contained within the fruit are resistant to the animal's digestive system. Therefore they are pooped by the bird or mammal some hours after the animal has moved away from the mother plant.
b) Heartworms are worms that live in the arteries of lungs and occasionally in the right-side of the heart of dogs, cats and other mammals, including wolves, foxes, ferrets, sea lions and (in rare instances) humans. As a result blood cannot be pumped properly which in turn affects other organs such as the liver and kidney.
c) A spider weaves a web among the branches of a tree. The spider is able to catch food in the web when insects try to fly through it. The tree is not harmed or helped by this interaction.
Task 1: Go to your google drive science folder and complete the "Symbiosis Assignment."
Task 2: Get with your Interstellar Ecologist project team, and continue working on your project. Read below to see what should be completed and what you should be working on: - All the details about the abiotic factors on your planet - All organisms chosen - All organisms also have a scientific name recorded, which should be made up of TWO words - All organisms should have a picture associated with them - All website sources for pictures should be listed under the bibliography at the end of the packet (it is acceptable to only list the web links) - All research sources for information should be included in the bibliography section at the end of the packet (you MUST use APA format and cite these properly) - All interactions information for your ecosystem should be filled out by the end of class (you can now do the three symbiosis examples) - All organisms on your list must be included in a well organized food web, so you should be working together to create a rough draft of this food web
Closure: Discuss in your team what work you should do outside of class in order to advance in the project. You should be done with everything in the packet at this point (the food web can just be a rough draft.)
Important information to know: Block period: 1 hour and 20 minutes project work time Day 3: approximately 30 minutes work time Next week: 2 full class periods before the project due date and in-class presentations (April 30)
Homework: 1) Complete any necessary project work to make sure you're prepared to begin putting together your final product and presentation. I will show you some examples in class. 2) Bring your colored pencils to our next class 3) NOTE: There will be an Open Response Question quiz on the last day of class this week
Week 31, Day 2 (block period)
PTT: 1) Make sure your table of contents is up to date
Task 1: 1) Complete the ecosystem story assignment. Get the paper from the bin to do this. 2) Turn this in for a grade when you are done.
Task 2: Take a look at the example projects from past years to get some ideas. Keep in mind that their projects are not necessarily as detailed as yours need to be!!!
Task 3: 1) Discuss in your project team to decide what type of final product you will make. Keep in mind that you will be presenting to the class for 5 minutes (and NO longer!). You will need the following things: - Final product that includes all information - Presentation visuals - A worksheet for classmates to fill out during your presentation (no more than 1 side of a sheet of paper) 2) Make a task list and decide who needs to do what part of the final product. Decide when these tasks need to be completed by. Remember: All students should be completing an equal amount of work!
NOTE: Here is a checklist to help you remember what must be included in your final product.
Task 4: Work on your projects!!! Checkpoint with Ms. Davis when she calls you up
Closure: Discuss in your team what needs to be done before our next class.
Homework: 1) Complete any necessary project work. 2) Review for the Open Response Question quiz tomorrow
Week 31, Day 3
NOTE: P5 and P7 - go straight to Task 2 - we will work on the ecology mind map later on
PTT: 1) Make sure you are sitting with your team. You will be sitting in these seats for the rest of the month. 2) Open up the ecology mind map directions and read them 3) Get one of the big white pieces of paper for the mind map
Task 1: Complete the mind map assignment with your team
Task 2: Project Work Time
Closure: Discuss in your team what needs to be done before our next class Here is the checklist for the project. Here is the best example project:
