Week 31, Day 1

PTT:
1) Take a set of papers and share them with your partner. Sort the terms into 2 piles - 1 for what happens in the chloroplast and 1 for what happens in the mitochondria. When done, we will compare the papers as a class.
2) After the first sort, take the second set of papers. Working with your partner, arrange these papers to show the process of photosynthesis (what happens in the chloroplast). Have Ms. Davis check it, and then rearrange the papers to show the process of cellular respiration (what happens in the mitochondria).

Task 1:
1) Turn to p. 122: Twins and Genetics
2) Finish discussing why twins can look different.
3) Add notes to the bottom of your page

Task 2:
1) Turn to p. 123
2) Write the date and title the page: The Nucleus and DNA
3) Record the goal question: why do we look the way that we do? (You should have an idea of the answer to this question...today we are going to learn more details.)
4) Watch this video:

5) Complete a flowchart that shows how structures function in the nucleus.

Task 3:
1) Turn to p. 124 and record the date
2) Title it: Genes, Chromosomes, and Phenotypes
3) Take a class survey of phenotypes - fill in the chart as a class.
A phenotype is a physical trait.
Trait
Yes
No
Tongue Rolling

Dimples

Straight hairline

Freckles

Left-handed

Curly hair

Cleft chin

Bent little finger

Detached earlobes

Blue eyes

Nearsighted

4) Below the chart, record notes about how genes determine your physical traits.

Task 4:
How do scientists use our genes today to study human history?

Closure:
At the top of page 125, record the goal question: Why do we look the way that we do? Based on what you learned today, your prior knowledge, and information you may find through researching, you need to write a paragraph that answers this question. You must use the following words in your paragraph: DNA, chromosome, gene, nucleus, mother, father, siblings, traits

Week 31, Day 2

PTT:
Finish p. 124 as needed

Task 1:
1) Check out this interactive video to learn more about DNA

2) Check out this website to learn more about why we look the way we do....make sure to watch the pages on DNA, chromosomes, and genes very closely

3) At the top of page 125, record the goal question: Why do we look the way that we do? Based on what you learned today, your prior knowledge, and information you may find through researching, you need to write a paragraph that answers this question. You must use the following words in your paragraph: DNA, chromosome, gene, nucleus, mother, father, siblings, traits
4) Share your paragraph with your partner. Compare what you each said. Were you both correct? Do either of you need to add anything?

Task 2:
Play CellCraft for the rest of the period. Bonus disposition points to anyone that finishes the game in class. Don't close out at the end of class!

Homework:
Finish CellCraft - consider this a review activity for the test (the parts of the cell and what they do). Bonus points on the test for anyone can bring me the game completed in their browser for our next class!

Week 31, Day 3

PTT:
1) Check to make sure your table of contents is up to date. Have you completed all pages from this unit? Notebooks will be graded on Friday during the test.
2) Take this survey for the Tec. They want to offer some awesome summer programs here at ASFM:

Task 1:
NOTE: if you are still confused about DNA and chromosomes, check out this link here:
Learn Genetics
Complete test review assignment and lab practical when called
Link to review assignment. Make a copy and complete it. Put it in your science folder to use when studying for the semester exam.

Homework:
Study for Friday's test
Here is the answer key for the review assignment:

Week 31, Day 4

PTT:
Spend the first 5 minutes of the class reviewing for the test and asking any last minute questions
PERIOD 3 - complete the two surveys linked above in the PTT for Day 3

Task 1:
Take biology test. Notebooks will be graded while you take the test.

Task 2:
When finished, make sure your notebook is totally updated. Look back through everything we've learned this year. We have our MAP tests next week and you will be able to see how much you've grown since last year.
