Lesson 1: Week 16, Day 1 - Huasteca Project Overview and Unit Test Review

PTT: Have your review out on your desk (in your notebook) or on your computer screen. Study while Ms. Davis comes around to check that it is completed.

Task 1: Huasteca Project Overview

Click to make a copy of the science section of the project document on your computer. Again, this is ONLY the SCIENCE portion of the project. You will get a hard copy that is for the WHOLE project in ALL classes either today or tomorrow.

Follow along on the document as we read it together.

Lesson 2: Week 16, Days 3-4

Task 1: Move into groups

- Check the list to make sure your group hasn't changed. Sit where Ms. Davis tells you to sit.

- Make sure you have your alternative exam packet.

Task 2: Division of work (group task)

- Turn to page 21 in your packet.

- Decide in your group who is responsible for what content (each person needs TWO or THREE content pieces).

- Decide in your group who is responsible for which vocabulary terms (each person needs 5-7 vocabulary terms). Make sure that everyone's assigned vocabulary terms go with their assigned content.

- Turn to page 6 in your packet. This is the sheet to record who is responsible for what content. Record what EVERY person in your group is responsible for. ALL of you need to record this.

- Get an extra sheet of paper and make a copy for Ms. Davis

Task 3: Project Format (group task)

- AS A GROUP, choose the format for your project (these are explained on pages 1-2 of the packet)
Option 1: Video and Pamphlet
Option 2: Storyboard with paragraphs for each board
Option 3: Children's Book
Option 4: Graphic Novel
Option 5: Magazine (printed or electronic)
Option 6: Interactive Visual Presentation (powerpoint, prezi, flash video, google earth virtual tour)
Option 7: Model/diorama with written essay
Option 8: Board Game and Advertisement Pamphlet
Option 9: Own Option (must be approved by ALL teachers)

- Once you have chosen, tell Ms. Davis what format you are using

Task 4: Project Planning (group task)

- Start planning out the flow or outline of your project. For example, if you are making a magazine, who will be responsible for each page? What will you call the magazine? If it's a board game, what will you call it? What will it look like? (You get the idea, right?)

Task 5: Research (individual task)

Based on the time, begin researching your chosen content and vocabulary.

Homework:

Come in dressed to go out into the canyon tomorrow. Bring a camera!

Lesson 3: Week 17, Day 1

Daily Goals:
1 - divide out science and socials content and vocabulary between group members
2 - discuss Huasteca field trip
3 - make a materials list for your project and decide who is buying/bringing what
4 - have an outline for your project
5 - have all your vocabulary words defined

PTT: Get into your groups and get out your packets.

Task 1: Division of Work (group task) - 5 minutes

The following groups have still not turned in a copy of your task division sheets (p. 6 in the packet):

Period 1: All good! Awesome!

Period 2: All good! Awesome!

Period 6: ???

Task 2: Division of Work (group task) - 5 minutes

- You need to divide out your socials content as well.
The information is on p. 22 in your packet
Record who is covering what content on p. 6 in your packet

Task 3: Huasteca Canyon Overview (group task) - 10 minutes

- Watch this presentation on La Huasteca in your group
This should help reinforce what we learned while on our field trip on Thursday, December 6th

- Discuss in your group:
What kind of rocks can be found in La Huasteca
How the mountains were formed
What evidence there is of weathering and erosion
Anything else you think is important for your project

- Make sure everyone in your group has a copy of the pictures they need for the project

Task 4: Project Planning (group task) - 10 minutes

- You already know who is responsible for what content and vocabulary
- The next question is: how is this going to be divided out in the project?
Will you each have a section in your video?
Will you each have a set of pages in your magazine/scrapbook or set of slides in your presentation?
Will you each create a different section of the model?
You get the idea...

- Secondly, what materials will you need and who is going to buy what?

Task 5: Research (individual task) - 25 minutes

Today's research task is to have all of your vocabulary words defined. These should be DETAILED definitions that you can use in your paragraphs about your content and/or your paragraphs for English.

Example: Oxidation refers to a chemical reaction where atoms have lost their electrons. In geology, this refers to what happens when iron in rocks comes into contact with oxygen in the presence of water. The iron atoms lose electrons to oxygen, and iron oxide forms. This is a crusty brown material that we call "rust." Rust is brittle and weak, so it breaks easily, and the rock begins to weather (break apart). Once the rust crumbles off, the rock can oxidize/rust more.

Lesson 4: Week 17, Day 2 (Tues for P1 & P2, Wed for P6)

Daily Goals:
1 - Check that you're completed with yesterday's tasks

- Period 6 groups that still owe me their task lists:
3
Regina Lozano
Eugenio Caballero
Rodrigo de la Garza
Corde Garza
4

Jorge Gutierrez
Ander Arce
5
Beba Cantu
Mina Kim
Diego Barcena
Eugenio Diaz
- Make sure that you have made a materials list for your project - who is buying what?
- Make sure that you have an outline for your project - what is it going to look like?
- Make sure that you have completed your definitions for your science vocabulary

Task 2: Science Questions (can work with group members) - 10 minutes
- Turn to pages 19 and 20 in the packet
- Read each section and answer the accompanying questions
- Show them to me when you are done - this will be a grade!!!

Task 3: Individual Research - 35 minutes

- Make sure you keep track of ALL sources (these need to be cited and turned in for socials)
- Make sure you have copies of pictures from the field trip that go with your content
- Don't forget about the Huasteca presentation you should have looked at yesterday - that's a good source to use as a starting point

- MAGAZINE, SCRAPBOOK, MODEL WITH ESSAY: Write a paragraph about each of your content topics, using your vocabulary words; with the model, make sure you explain the connection between your content and the model as well
- PRESENTATION: Have 1-2 paragraphs summarizing all your content (science and socials) in your pamphlet; make sure your content pieces are covered IN DETAIL in your slides (2-3 slides with pictures), use 1 slide for every 1 or 2 vocabulary terms (with pictures for each term!) - you each should have 7 slides (minimum!), plus there should be a title page and a table of contents page that lists the slides in order AND the author of each slide
- VIDEO: you should write a paragraph about each content piece as part of your script - this information will be summarized in the accompanying pamphlet
